The first annual "Kelseyville Olive Festival" took place last Sunday, March 21st at the Kelseyville Olive Mill. The venue was packed all day and cars were parked all the way into downtown Kelseyville. Local chefs gave out samples of their olive inspired dishes, local wineries poured their wines and nurseries sold small trees to future olive farmers and backyard growers. There were at least 7 other olive oil producers at the event, and we were busy all day giving out samples and answering questions by eager growers and future oil producers, as well as olive oil lovers and people eager to learn about olives and olive oil. In the photo above you can see Nick Buttitta, owner of Rosa D'Oro Winery in Kelseyville, who organized the event along with his daughter, Livia and Jeff Smith, the owner of the Olive Mill. The blue piece of equipment above our heads is part of the mill, which is assembled and running non stop during harvest season October through December.

Field Blend

Using a field blend of different varieties of olives gives the oil it's unique flavor profile. Also, picking at different levels of ripeness provides a balance of peppery green and smooth nutty flavors.
